VRA Search Dogs

Community Grants 2024

Two Tracking Collar Systems for Search Dogs (LFF 1601)
We require $3,600 funds for 2 dog tracking collar systems. Search dogs are fast and can quickly cover hostile terrain that is difficult to access by a typical human line search. Dogs and their handlers can also search in the dark, which is particularly important for lost children where quick finds are critical for survival. Typically, during a search the dogs are out of sight of the handler, making, tracking collars essential for knowing which areas have been searched. Of critical importance is that the searched areas are downloaded from the collars by the police command centre during the search to give them immediate confirmation of the areas searched. These downloads show the dog track overlaying detailed area maps and are later presented to the coroner at an inquest. The collars will also be used in training to allow handlers to refine their techniques to ensure proper area coverage.
